Gavin Rossdale: Wanderlust - Review

July 8, 2008

Mixed reviews for three summer albums - Arts

On June 3, Gavin Rossdale, formerly of the band Bush, released his solo album, “Wanderlust.” After listening to the album, it seems that Rossdale had something to prove and might not have succeeded.

Visibly trying to find himself as a solo artist, he portrays his struggle in some of the lyrics and tries a variety of styles, which does not go over well. The best example of this weird experimentation is the song This Place Is on Fire found at the end of the album.

The first two songs are good enough to keep one listening, but not good enough to get one excited about “Wanderlust.” It is not until one gets to Forever May You Run, that one is finally able to truly hear Rossdale and his talents.

The best songs on this record are slow and with no pretensions, unlike the other songs where the listener will be able to tell that Rossdale is trying too hard. It might be ironic that in the song Love Remains the Same, one of the better songs on this album, the lyrics go “the truth is, I am done pretending.” His website, gavinrossdale.com, claims that “Wanderlust” explores a more mature Gavin, with a sense of freedom, emotion, and musical depth never heard from the grunge-era superstar.”

Overall, it’s a decent record with some hits and misses. It is more slow paced and mellow than loud and fast even though Rossdale does attempt slow songs here and there. You should only buy “Wanderlust” if you are Rossdale fan. If you are just looking for something new to listen to, keep looking.

Gavin Rossdale: Wanderlust Review

Tamara Palmer from Metromix gives Gavin Rossdale’s Wanderlust 2-1/2 Stars - check out the review below..

Gavin Rossdale, ‘Wanderlust’ | Metromix New York

Backstory: In the mid-‘90s, Gavin Rossdale fronted the band Bush, the British answer to American grunge rock outfits like Nirvana and Pearl Jam that made its biggest Stateside rumbles with the sound-alike songs “Glycerine” and “Swallowed.” He’s remained in the public eye as a tabloid fixture thanks to his 2002 marriage to Gwen Stefani, who is currently pregnant with their second child.

Why you should care: If you have an undying love for the grunge sound, or for anything related to Gwen Stefani, this might be interesting.

Verdict: Rossdale has softened up his voice somewhat from his earlier days, so he sounds better and not like he’s trying to imitate Kurt Cobain anymore. But these songs sound stuck in the ‘90s, minus the sort of hooks and impact that catapulted songs like “Smells Like Teen Spirit” or “Jeremy” to the top. Instead, tunes like “Forever May You Run” and “Love Remains the Same” come off as long and weepy, even though they’re under five minutes. The album ends with “This Place Is on Fire,” a bizarre minute of vocoder that’s even more out of place than “Future World,” a thin song actually given more of a retro feel by the use of faux reggae-dub sound effects.

X-Factor: Rossdale also dabbles in the acting world, and has a supporting role in what promises to be a strange movie due out next year. “Frost Flowers” describes a love story with a wrinkle in time: a man from the present gets a deceased woman from the past (played by Holly Hunter) pregnant.

Gavin Rossdale: Review - CANOE

June 11, 2008

Another review of Gavin Rossdale’s album Wanderlust-

for better or worse I’ll post the reviews of the album i come across - most of the reviews are positive - some are not so

CANOE — JAM! Music: Gavin Rossdale album a hit-or-miss
Gavin Rossdale made a pretty big splash with his music before becoming the envy of men everywhere with his marriage to ultimate rock girl Gwen Stefani.

The former frontman for Bush, whose 1994 debut “Sixteen Stone” was one of the more popular discs of the 90’s, returns with his first solo outing, “Wanderlust,” and the result is a decidedly mixed bag.

While his raspy voice and soaring choruses echo his finer ’90s moments, Rossdale settles for overly slick production and the result makes the disc quite derivative (maybe we can blame that on mercenary producer Bob Rock, who somehow managed to make even Metallica sound too slick).

“Wanderlust” succeeds in its simpler moments. Disc opener “Can’t Stop The World” is a melodic rocker with a knockout chorus and lead single “Love Remains The Same” is a lush ballad that works well with Rossdale’s rasp, as do dynamic tracks like the escapist “Drive” and the electro-charged doom of “Future World.”

Where the frustration sets in is on tracks like the muddy “This is Happiness,” which is just plain sloppy but contains one of the catchiest choruses on the disc. And there’s the rub: each song does boast a moment where you take notice before it retreats into dry repetition.

I won’t even get into it with “Another Night In The Hills” - which lyrically seems a bit beneath Rossdale’s typical stream-of-consciousness style: “She likes her cocaine/right on the membranes/She’s one to give favours/to the movers and shakers.”

Gavin Rossdale offers a respectable effort but rests on his laurels a bit too much on “Wanderlust.”

Check out this track: Emotive disc closer “Beauty in the Beast” showcases a very welcome introspective side to Rossdale’s persona.
