They came, they saw, and still he didn’t conquer. Even though reigning Wimbledon tennis champ Roger Federer had buddies Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale screaming support during an epic final on Sunday, it was not enough to hold off hotshot Rafael Nadal in what has already been called the greatest final of all time.

But if they gave grand slam titles to spirited supporters, Rossdale would surely be crowned world champ. During a match that slugged on for nearly five hours on-court, Rossdale’s repertoire of fist punching, seat jumping and hollering boosted the energy level from the usually placid competitors’ guest box.

In the five-set match (which spanned seven hours because of rain delays), Spain’s Nadal clawed back to win the final set against Federer, preventing the Swiss champ from winning a sixth Wimbledon title.

Federer and Rossdale have been friends for years – in the past, they have even been spotted playing tennis together in Los Angeles. Earlier in this two-week tournament, the tennis ace joined the Rossdales and their son Kingston, 2, as they went ape at the London Zoo.

During Sunday’s match a pregnant Stefani, wearing a red, white and black herringbone off-the-shoulder dress, had to remove her sunglasses as the light faded in the evening gloom for what turned out to be the longest final in Wimbledon history – and the first Spanish victory for 42 years.

If losing was hard for Federer, it appeared similarly painful for his famous fans. Moments after winning, Nadal leapt on top of a commentators’ box – directly in front of pop’s power couple – to embrace his family. While hundreds stood and applauded, only Rossdale, Stefani and Federer’s girlfriend, Miroslava Vavrinec, remained in their seats.

The couple cuddled as they sat and watched pal Roger Federer win his second round match against Robin Soderling on the Center Court. Gwen looked comfortable in the unusual British warm wheather even though she must be ready to burst with baby joy.

No doubt, Gwen Stefani is a nervous wreck, worrying that her rocker husband, Gavin Rossdale, will miss the birth of their second baby this summer.

Gavin is gearing up for a world tour to promote his new solo CD, Wanderlust, just as Gwen is entering the last days of her pregnancy.

“Gwen is miffed that Gavin didn’t have the album’s release date pushed back,” says a source. “She put her career on hold to spend time with him and their 2-year-old, Kingston, and she doesn’t feel like Gavin is holding up his end of the bargain.”

But even if the 40-year-old takes a break to be in the delivery room, he “is going to hit the road within weeks” of the baby’s expected July birth, adds the source.

They paid a visit to Claim Jumper restaurant for what appeared to be a baby shower. Before going back home, Gwen met husband Gavin Rossdale and their son Kingston, 2, at a friends house.

The 16 Gwen Stefani After-the-Fires scholarship recipients come from all backgrounds with a variety of academic aspirations. Yet, they share the bond of losing everything in the October fires. Esther Hess, a senior from Rancho Bernardo High School, lost her home, as well as a substantial part of her father’s income due to the fires. The additional financial strain of three children in college at the same time was almost too much to bear. Esther feared that her dreams of attending college would have to be put on hold. Erica Wery, another fire victim, rushed to evacuate senior citizens from the elder care facility her family operated out of their home. Thankfully, everyone made it out safe, but Erica’s family lost their home and their income was affected, as well. Both of these students, along with 14 others, will be able to continue with their educational pursuits thanks to the financial assistance they receive from the Gwen Stefani After-the-Fires Scholarship.

“This is a way we really make a difference in the community,” stated Bob Kelly, president and CEO of The San Diego Foundation. “I thank Ms. Stefani for her generous gift because these scholarships not only help the students, but help San Diego for future generations. We are proud of these recipients and know that they have endured a lot to get to where they are.”

The San Diego Foundation continues to offer the scholarships for fire victims and the application deadline has been extended to June 30, 2008, to allow more students the opportunity to apply for scholarship assistance. Former Bush frontman, Gavin Rossdale, aka Mr Gwen Stefani, has released his first solo album and he told our US correspondent about his expectations and what it’s like playing second banana to his wife Gwen!

“The last album did so badly that I don’t feel any pressure about this one,” he said at his management office in Los Angeles last week. His latest album Wanderlust is the first since the demise of his previous band, ‘Institute’.

The self-deprecating rock star jokes about his last record with Institute. “Well, we only had four fans. At least they were the members of U2, so maybe altogether we had eight fans!”

Rossdale doesn’t mind that his wife Gwen is a bigger rock star than he is.

“I love that Gwen is an independent girl who goes and does her thing,” says Gavin.

“She’s obviously not the same person at home as she is publicly but I’m a very secure guy. I have to tell you, as a man, it takes a lot of power not to be intimidated by that kind of success. But for me, I just wouldn’t succumb to that kind of emasculating vulnerability.”

Meanwhile, the first single off Wanderlust, ‘Love Remains the Same’, is about…. who else? “It’s a celebration of my love for Gwen. What can I say? I’m a bit of a sucker.”
