Ex-Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale is due for a return on June 9 with his debut solo album ‘WANDERlust’ through Interscope. Rock Sound talks paparazzi, Bush, Gwen Stefani and more…
Why do you sound so agitated on the album when you probably don’t have too much to be agitated about?
“I’m only really interested in conflict and real life. Everyone’s life is complicated I think, and while songs like ‘Frontline’ – which is about the war – is very far from my reality, it still affects me and I still think about it.”
How do you feel about the bad press Bush used to get in the UK?
“It wasn’t all bad, but you couldn’t take it seriously because it was so extreme. You can’t really sell 1.5 million records and be the critics favourite. I think people who were afraid to not be a part of the gang who criticised me wrote a lot of it. When you see the same thing written again and again it just seems weak because it’s clearly not an original thought. There were a lot more people who liked me than critics who didn’t and I’d rather have that than have Everett True think I was the dog’s bollocks.”
How did you deal with it at the time?
“Some of the criticism made me more combative. I went through a phase of phoning people up and having a go at them, but I never wanted to be one of those people that gets a bit of success and then gets upset because the critics hate me. It’s like, ‘Shut up, you’ve got a great life, just deal with it.’”
How do you deal with life in the public eye and being known mainly for being Gwen Stefani’s husband?
“It can get frustrating being hounded by that culture and not being seen to work, but the solo album is already creating a buzz so hopefully that’ll change. People have started writing to me saying it’s good to hear me making music again and I’m like, ‘I never stopped!’”
How does it affect you personally?
“It’s hard to do normal things with your kid when there are seven photographers at your door. My mum likes some of those pictures though! She always says things like, ‘Well it’s nice to see you looking so well!’”
Have you ever lost your cool with any of those paparazzi types?
“You can’t do anything about it, so it would be an empty fight. ‘Pissing into the wind’ is the phrase I think! You just have to accept that if you have a privileged life no-one wants to hear you complain. Plus, Gwen doesn’t like it if I get a bit aggressive or say something, even if I’m defending her. Now that I have a son there’s another incentive to keep calm.”
Do you and Gwen ever give each other musical advice?
“Inevitably, we hear every song we do from the demo stage to the end. I just try and be supportive and say nice things or nothing at all as you do with anyone you care about. The thing with Gwen is that she doesn’t really like rock music. I’ll put on something like Fugazi and I’ll be swimming in a sea of ecstasy, but she’ll say something like, ‘Oh my God, put the reggae back on.’ Our paths meet somewhere in Jamaica but that’s about it.”

3 Gadgets Gavin Rossdale loves
April 21, 2008
Three Gadgets Gavin Rossdale Never Leaves Home Without - Switched
London-born Gavin Rossdale first achieved mainstream success in the mid 90s as lead singer of the grunge rock band Bush. Though the group didn’t catch on in England, Bush found success stateside with big radio hits ‘Glycerine,’ ‘Swallowed’ and ‘Machinehead.’ Gavin married Gwen Stefani in the early 00s. Not content to work only in music, Gavin has acted in Hollywood with parts in movies like ‘Constantine’ and ‘Little Black Book.’
Gavin’s first solo album ‘Wanderlust’ is due out in June, and he took time to answer our Switched Questionnaire. Though Gavin isn’t a big gamer, he always keeps connected with his BlackBerry, iPod and laptop.
What gadgets do you always bring with you for down time?
The BlackBerry
Roasted brown rice tea
iPod
Laptop
What cell phone do you have right now and what do you love/hate about it?
My Curve. Love the BlackBerry Messenger. Photos could be better but I like it a lot. My son Kingston threw my iPhone away in Australia. I was enjoying it…
Who’s the last person you sent a text message to and what was it about?
I just texted my friend Mark in London who’s cycling in the dark without a light. I was trying to tell him to get a light.
Where do you go pretty much every time you get online?
The Guardian newspaper’s site
What annoys you most about your iPod, cell phone, or laptop?
Losing them.
Name one thing you wish your iPod/cellphone/laptop could do that it doesn’t do now?
It should stop me doing something when I’m pissed off.
What upcoming gadget can you not wait to get your hands on?
My new baby.
You’re stranded on a desert island: What gadget do you bring?
Well my laptop has a lot of potential. Millions of empty pages to write on. And can I get online? That’d be perfect — stranded no more…
What’s the most-played song or artist on your iPod?
Recently, Burial. And before that, probably Radiohead.
Blackberry, Sidekick, or Treo?
Curve
Would you ever get an iPhone?
Digging the Curve right now — online all the time. The iPhone sure is pretty.
What’s the longest time you’ve ever spent playing a video game in one sitting and what game was it?
3 days solid with no sleep — game called “life.”
Mac or PC?
Mac all the way. PCs are a different universe to me. Double dutch w/ cream on.

Gavin Rossdale Interview: ARTISTdirect
April 18, 2008
Gavin Rossdale is feeling quite creative these days. Even though he stands on the eve of finally releasing his solo debut WANDERLUST (Interscope), he’s still constantly writing. WANDERLUST is one of the best rock records of 2008. It’s a swirling amalgam of electronic textures, distorted guitars and Rossdale’s unmistakable voice. It’s also an evolution from Bush, the now-classic, platinum selling alt rock juggernaut that made a name for him. Rossdale takes listeners down a personal road through the course of the record, without ever slowing down.
In between rehearsals, he relaxes at his Los Angeles home. With a glimmer in his eye and a smile, he exclaims, “Making a solo record is kind of like jumping across an empty swimming pool.” He laughs, “There are a lot of casualties!” However, Rossdale has emerged triumphantly, crossing the pool, and making a career-defining album. Over the course of the next 30 minutes, he proceeded to delve into WANDERLUST, and much more for ARTISTdirect.
It feels like you had a lot to say on this record, and that it was a long time in the making.

iProng - Interview with Gavin Rossdale
It’s Thursday night and Gavin Rossdale and I are walking through the underground halls of the Hard Rock Live, eyeing the memorabilia on the walls as we go. Gavin points to a photo of the Pixies, refers to Black Francis as a deity, and asks if I’m into them. I sheepishly admit that I was a little too young to be into the Pixies back when they were still together and that checking out their music has remained on my to-do list for some fifteen years. I make a mental note to grab ahold of the first Pixies album I can find when I get home. I notice that Gavin’s trademark longish hair has been replaced by a fairly standard cut, and I ask him what happened to his hair. He takes a look at my shoulder-length hair and says “I gave it to you.”
Half an hour earlier, Gavin and I are sitting on adjacent couches in his dressing room, discussing everything from his upcoming album to what the accompanying launch of his solo career means for the prospects of his former band, Bush, which dominated the late-nineties grunge rock scene before dissolving six years ago. This isn’t the first time Gavin has ventured back into music-making since the breakup, but unlike his Institute project in 2005, his latest endeavor seems like it actually has a chance to succeed. When I tell him that I think his newly released ballad of a single, Love Remains The Same, doesn’t sound like it’s tied to the nineties in the way Bush’s ballads generally were, he smiles and replies “Thank the Lord.” - CONTINUED

Buzznet Interview
April 1, 2008
Gavin Rossdale returns with solo LP - Buzznet
Gavin Rossdale makes headlines these days when he’s spotted out and about in L.A. with his wife, Gwen Stefani, but rock fans know him best as the former leader of Bush, the ’90s alt-rock juggernaut that had 10 big singles and sold more than 10 million albums.
Following a two-year hiatus that came after the band broke up in 2002, Rossdale went on to form Institute, a short-lived rock group that released one album, Distort Yourself, in 2005.
Now Rossdale is back again, but this time he’s keeping it simple: The singer/guitarist has crafted his first solo record, Wanderlust, and is releasing it in June. Last week Buzznet caught up with the man himself to pick his brain about his new project, Gwen’s appearance on it, whether Bush will ever get back together and more.
Buzznet: Why did you decide to call this a “solo album,” if you’re working with other musicians on it? Does this get at the essence of you in a way the Institute album didn’t?
Gavin Rossdale: Yes, it’s ironically called a solo record when it’s clear that other people are involved. Maybe it means I am the only one responsible for it. Being in Bush was everything to me, and I hope to re-ignite that fire someday. I am really proud of the Institute record and the music we made. It had some pretty heavy moments. What I liked about WANDERLUST is that I had a lot of ground I wanted to return to that I had forsaken with the heavier, detuned style. I like to refer to it as my “tin machine” period. Good — but heavy. I have tried to put my essence in every record I have made. This happens to be a different essence.

Kingston is My Greatest Triumph
December 11, 2007
Gavin Rossdale has had his share of success, both in his career and in his marriage to Gwen Stefani. But their son, Kingston, is his “greatest triumph.”"This is Kingston,” Gavin told “Extra” at the Bank of the West Pro-Celebrity Tennis Classic as the toddler crawled onto his lap. “Finally, I got something right.”
Gavin, who sold millions of records with the band Bush, is now preparing for a solo career, much like Gwen.
“I just finished a record that comes out next year,” said Gavin. “It’s a solo record.”
With such talented parents, it’s no wonder that little Kingston, 1, has an ear for music.
“He was on tour with Gwen, he’d come and watch the show with me with the headphones on,” Gavin said. “He’s big on drums.”
But how does their toddler handle the constant media attention that surrounds two famous parents?
“We made a conscious decision [to have a child]. We would have a baby and the baby joins our life. We don’t stop for his,” Gavin explained. “If we were going to be followed by paparazzi, it doesn’t mean we would leave him home…we don’t take life too seriously.”
