WHERE HAVE I BEEN.
WORKING LIKE MY LIFE IS ON FIRE OF COURSE.

BUT I HAVE NOT SAT DOWN.WELL ONCE,ON THE WAY TO VEGAS.
AND THEN FOR THE 9TH TIME THIS YEAR,THE SHOW IN VEGAS.
GREAT CHARITY.ECHOES OF HOPE-CHECK IT OUT.
THEN TO SAN FRANCISCO.A WICKED MEAL WITH MY FRIENDS FROM THE NICE COLLECTIVE AT THE BRILLIANT ORSON IN SF. MOLECULAR COOKING THAT FILLS YOU UP.
IN ALL WAYS.

AND WHAT A SHOW IN GOLDEN GATE PARK-12,500 PEOPLE-
SAN FRANCISCO SUNSHINE…
PLAYING FOR FRIENDS AND STRANGERS.
PERFECT.

THEN CAME HOME,2 DAYS IN THE STUDIO,SCRAMBLING SOUNDS AND WORDS AND I MISSED CHRIS’S BIRTHDAY PARTY-NAUGHTY FRIEND I AM.SORRY CHRIS.
SO FAR TO DRIVE AND NO-ONE TO DRIVE WHO’S UNDRINKING.
LOS ANGELES IS BIG.

OH YEAH-SUNDAY NIGHT I FLEW BACK AND WENT STRAIGHT TO THE ECHOPLEX TO SEE SHELLAC -WHO BESIDES BEING FRIENDS OF MINE ALSO HAPPEN TO BE A BRILLIANT BAND I LIKE A LOT.PLUS STEVE’S(FROM SHELLAC) WAY BETTER HALF HEATHER IS A FRIEND SO I AM ALWAYS HAPPY TO SEE HER.

AND THEN IT WAS MONDAY-ON THE INSPIRATION TRAIL.
LOVING ROCK MUSIC.

ACCLIMATISING TO KINGSTON SOUND-
2 DAYS OF ENDEAVOUR AND ENJOYMENT-SOMETIMES.
IT AIN’T EASY-SOUNDS OUT OF NOWHERE.

AND NOW A TRIP
NYC FOR A MINUTE THEN LONDON.

FAMILY,FRIENDS,STELLA AND THEN FAMILY,FRIENDS AND …..LONDON

SOON TO RETURN-FASTER THAN IT TAKES TO LEARN RUSSIAN.
JULY BRINGS MORE SHOWS,MORE MUSIC,MORE….HOPE

AND THEN PLAN SOME MORE TOURING,OF COURSE,SEP/OCT/NOVEMBER….
AS SOON AS I AM ALLOWED….MID-SEP. SOUNDS GOOD.

I AM READING JAMES FREY’S BRIGHT SHINY MORNING AND ENJOYING IT A LOT.
WITH SONIC YOUTH INTERLUDES.

I NEED TO SEE MY FAMILY..OF COURSE AND THAT WILL BE SOON.YAY!

THE NIGHT IS QUIET,THE STILL STREET BURNS ORANGE,I HAD 2 DAYS OFF(BEST FRIEND’S BIRTHDAY) AND WE’RE PLAYING TOMORROW NIGHT.

I’M IN A HOTEL ROOM ON THE TOP FLOOR OF A MEDIUM SIZED FORGETTABLE BUILDING.

THE ROOM HAS A BED ,A CHEST OF DRAWERS(WHO USES THOSE?)AND THERE’S A GREEN SOFA AND A LAMP AND 2 COPIES OF THE KANSAS SWIMWEAR DESIGNS OR SOMETHING.

I’M IN A WAITING ROOM-FOR THE DOCTOR OR SOMETHING.

I LISTENED TO SOME SONGS I MADE AND WONDERING WHICH,IF ANY,I WILL RECORD WITH THIS BAND.

THEN GOT BORED OF MYSELF AND I HAVE A PLAYLIST WITH CAT POWER AND FOG-SO

NOW THEY TRADE OFF TRACKS WITH EACH OTHER.NICE.

I CANNOT BELIEVE HOW QUICK THE END OF THIS RUN APPROACHES AND IT IS COMING TOO SOON.WHEN WE BEGAN(DID I TELL YOU THIS?)I ASKED TO PLAY FOR AGES AND AGES AND WE GOT 2 AND A BIT MONTHS AND I FEEL LIKE WE’RE JUST BEGINNING.IT’S BEEN 40-ODD SHOWS APPARENTLY.

IT’S A DRAG TO NOT KNOW WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS BUT IT FEELS TOTALLY PURE AT THE SAME TIME.LIKE THIS COULD CRASH AND BURN,OR JUST BURN ACTUALLY

AND THAT MAKES THIS TOUR SO SPECIAL.

I HAVE TO THANK YOU FOR COMING OUT TO THE SHOWS.I FEEL LIKE WE HAVE HAD SOME GREAT TIMES.SOME WILD UNREPEATABLE MOMENTS WHERE WE GAVE EACH OTHER THE MOST WE COULD AT THAT POINT.

FOR EXAMPLE THERE WAS,IN ATLANTA,THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GIRL WHO CRIED FROM THE FIRST SONG ALL THE WAY THROUGH TO THE LAST.

IT WAS,SHE WAS,SHE IS INCREDIBLE-THANKYOU.

FOR ME,THAT IS IT RIGHT THERE.

THE FORCE THAT DRIVES US TO REACH OUT TO YOU,NIGHT AFTER NIGHT.

ALL OF US-THE BAND,THE CREW-ALL ON THE HOLY GRAIL OF THAT FEELING.

TO GIVE OF YOURSELF FOR THE AUDIENCE-FOR THE NIGHT-TO CREATE ELECTRICITY-

TO CHANGE YOU———-THROWN INTO EMOTIONAL TORNADOES TO WHICH WE SUCCUMB.

I CAN’T WAIT TO PLAY TOMORROW HERE IN KANSAS.OUR LAST TRIP HERE WAS FOR THE EXTREME MAKEOVER SHOW.AND WHAT PLEASURE THAT WAS TO BE A SMALL PART OF.

WE WILL SEE THE WHOLE FAMILY TOMORROW SO I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING HOW THEY’RE DOING.

AND FROM THERE WE HAVE MAYBE TEN MORE DAYS?-I’D BETTER CHECK -ANYHOW WORKING WEST I THINK.

I WANT TO THANK ALL THE PEOPLE THAT CAN’T MAKE THE SHOWS YET WANT TO COME-AND I WILL TRY TO GET TO YOU.

ENGLAND I MISS YOU,EUROPE,SOUTH EAST ASIA…….SO MUCH OUT THERE.

the day off yesterday was a joke.

first off in madrid,spain-some lethal tennis was being played and i woke up to the final at the madrid masters.

perfect outcome.

i step out of the bus and into the heat.

met the boys on the beach-

and as promised continued into the water.

dropping keys,towel and crackberry with them.

then i wandered the beach diving into the water every now and again.

i suddenly realised i had not eaten and went to the bar with my friend jr-

that is when the liquid breakfast began,normally i’d take eggs over tequila but i am not going to decline a gracious offer and actually it tasted pretty good.

i did actually eat the weirdest sandwich at the same time.

now this was some kind of panini,but i think it was crusty bread holding water.bizarre.

but not even a blip in my thusfar perfect day.

i had a little work to do,then back to the beach and shades on lying on your back in the ocean- floating your stress away trick that we all love so much.

i woke up to the dull thud of rain and looked out to an ominous,yet beautiful dark sky.

i thought about some stretching and then realised i had a bunch of phone interviews-which i did,happily,generally one one leg,or the other,rarely both.

multi-tasking and finding ways to be myself and not be repetitive.

sometimes similar questions illicit similar answers.

anyhow,i feel good and ready for the next run.

Flying from Toronto to la.

It’s been a great few weeks since I last wrote.

First off,the shows in the mid west were brilliant.

the shows wherever we’ve played have been something else.

Since it’s the start of the record and playing shows,itseems best to have no expectations and allow each night to be something new.

I can see how the record is firing into people’slives.making assassin music.

I’ll stay the dark horse.

So,each show takes me further out there.

And the audiences….thankyou…you fire me up.

I’ve always thought the shows are looped and energy comesaround,and you treated us like friends you just pick back up with,no matter howlong since you’ve seen them.

And I know there’s new people there too-and so we start anew dialogue and that’s music.

I still consider this really early on this record,

So many still unaware but the word is out and the showsreflected that.

We had a blast in san diego-did some acoustic shows (3 actually)-totally stripped down andintimate.

And then had a brilliant day watching the horses and playinga show at the racetrack at del mar,and the crowd was immense.and wherever youcould see,there were people.rammed is another word.you gotta love that.

And all on a warm summer night.one of those perfect momentsyou have to hold with everything you got.

Then onto vegas-the playground of excess.i love vegas.it isbuilt for pleasure.

We played the joint-which brought back so many bushmemories(like most shows)but I remember the first time we played there,and whowas with us and what we did,yeah,memories……….anyhow the show was excellent.

Then we did an acoustic set at wasted space,the new barinside the hard rock..which was hilarious.i totally enjoyed myself and felt like lenny bruce as the crowd was there to party(vegas)and

We only had a couple of acoustic guitars…so we played awhile and it was surreal and I loved the chaos.

Then on into the good night …,we went out till someonementioned it was light outside and we should be getting flights home.

And these last few days been up here in Toronto-doing promofor the record and “mentoring”on Canadian idol

And performing on there.

It’s obviously a world and a half away from what I know ordo,but quite a way to play to Canada on one night.

I enjoyed it,the contestants really cared about the musicand their singing.as they should,but it was good to see.

I watched them the night after we had discussed their songsand found myself rooting for them all.

I look forward to coming back to Canada to play some showslater in the year.we’ve had some massive shows there.

Some weird airplane food has arrived and I need to have itremoved.so,I have to go get some help.

It’s staring at me and I don’t like it.
